Origin
The southernmost winery in California’s Sonoma Coast appellation, the 650-acre Keller Estate is nestled in hilly terrain just 45 minutes north of San Francisco. The site’s most important geographic feature is the nearby Petaluma Gap—a depression that cuts through the Coastal Range and funnels fog and chilly Pacific breezes inland during the growing season. This cooling effect— combined with warm, sunny afternoons and rocky, fast-draining soils—is ideal for producing complex, sophisticated Pinot Noir.
Pairings
Demonstrating Pinot Noir’s charming and seductive nature, Keller Estate’s 2009 bottling offers exceptional flexibility with a huge spectrum of dishes. It can easily stand up to poultry and lighter red meats, and won’t overwhelm many seafood and vegetarian dishes. Fresh herbs and garlic will play to the wine’s earthier side, while cinnamon, nutmeg and coriander will echo its inherent spiciness. For a vegetarian option, consider grilled mushrooms and buttery polenta with chopped thyme or rosemary.

Serve at cool room temperature (62°F).
Winemaker
Founded in 1989 by Arturo Keller, an automotive engineer from Mexico City, and his wife Deborah, the estate is now overseen by Ana Keller, Arturo’s daughter. The wines are currently made by Jacqueline Yoakum, who joined Keller Estate in 2010. Her impressive resume includes a master’s degree from U.C. Davis, as well as work in the cellars of Stag’s Leap, Joseph Phelps, Schramsberg, Cakebread and, most importantly, Littorai, where her time with Ted Lemon helped her refine the art of winemaking. Keller Estate’s current production is 5,000 cases per year of estate-grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, as well as tiny amounts of Viognier, Pinot Gris, Syrah and sparkling brut.
The Wine
This Burgundian style wine, vinted in small open-top fermenters and aged for 10 months in French oak, is a stunning expression of both the cool Sonoma region and the Pinot Noir grape. Ripe, sumptuous flavors of raspberry, black cherry and plum are delicately layered with background notes of allspice, roasted herbs and forest floor. It is medium-bodied with admirable concentration and a broad savory finish.
