Winemaker
Founded in 1989 by Arturo Keller, an
automotive engineer from Mexico City,
and his wife, Deborah, the estate is
now overseen by Ana Keller, Arturo’s
daughter. The wines are currently made
by Jacqueline Yoakum, who joined
Keller Estate in 2010. Her impressive
resume includes a master’s degree from
U.C., Davis, as well as work in the
cellars of Stag’s Leap, Joseph Phelps,
Schramsberg, Cakebread and, most
importantly, Littorai, where her time
with Ted Lemon helped her refine the
art of winemaking. The winery’s current
annual production is 5,000 cases of
estate grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay,
as well as tiny amounts of Viognier,
Pinot Gris, Syrah and sparkling brut.
The Wine
While the grapes come from the same
vineyard lots used to make Keller
Estate’s “La Cruz” Chardonnay, the
“Oro de Plata” is crafted in a leaner,
more vibrant style. The difference is that
only 10 percent of the wine spends any
time in wood or undergoes malolactic
fermentation, both of which contribute
the flavor and textural richness that
has traditionally been the hallmark of
Keller Estate Chardonnay. This crisp and
refreshing interpretation emphatically
launches aromas of white peach, underripe
apricot, apple and citrus blossom,
while the palate boasts flavors of papaya,
Asian pear, honey, Meyer lemon zest and
a hint of mineral.
