Origin
Located 125 miles north of San Francisco, midway between Ukiah and Willits, the Redwood Valley American Viticultural Area was established in 1997 and is a subset of the larger Mendocino and North Coast AVA s. Encompassing 22,500 acres, this upland valley sits 200 feet above vineyards planted in the nearby Ukiah and Senal Valleys. The cool conditions here, coupled with very rare “Redvine” soil—red clay strewn with fist-sized rocks—make Redwood Valley one of California’s most distinctive viticultural enclaves.
Pairings
Heavier and more extracted Carignanbased blends work best with rich red meats that help neutralize the grape’s often significant tannin load. However, the bouyant, more lustrous and juicy Indica from Lioco also shines with lighter fare ranging from duck and quail to a double-cut pork chop. With higher acidity and balanced tannins, it can pair beautifully with fresh lettuce salads and peppery greens, especially when combined with cheese— preferably a semi-hard goat cheese like Petit Basque—and a not-toosharp, wine-friendly dressing.

Serve at cool room temperature (62°F).
Winemaker
The name “Lioco” fuses together abbreviated forms of the partners’ last names: Licklider and O’Connor. (The formula for a winery you can trust: LI-cklider + OCO-nnor = LIOCO.) Before making wine himself, Kevin O’Connor was the wine director at Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant Spago in Beverly Hills. Back in 2005, he partnered with the wine import specialist Matt Licklider to form Lioco, a brand fully committed to the belief that meticulous vineyard selection combined with restrained winemaking will naturally produce compelling wine. With that goal in mind, this dynamic duo sources grapes from California’s finest appellations and vinifies them with minimal intervention.
The Wine
A “distinctly Californian” “heritage blend” of “underdog” varietals, the 2009 Indica brings together old-vine Carignan (85 percent), Grenache and Petite Sirah. Harvested from Alvin Tollini’s certified organic vineyard and Bill Crawford’s McDowell Vineyard, the grapes were hand-sorted and fermented in stainlesssteel tanks using wild yeast, after which the finished wine was aged in neutral oak for 10 months. A little more redfruit- oriented than one might expect, it features notes of cherry, raspberry, plum, wild strawberry and pomegranate. On the nose and palate, background notes of lightly smoked game, bay leaf, white pepper, anise and cardamom add interest and complexity.
