Located at the northern end of California's Central Valley, about a 90-minute drive east from San Francisco, Lodi is a warm growing region with a bit of moderating maritime influence from the San Pablo Bay, a body of water that reaches inland from San Francisco Bay. Lodi is a treasure trove of old-vine Zinfandel vineyards and experienced growers who often experiment with new or underappreciated grape varieties.
Barbera's natural acidity makes it a perfect foil for tomato sauces, either with pasta or on pizza, while its fresh fruit contrasts well with savory meats and sausages. A big, fruity California Barbera like this one also pairs beautifully with Gorgonzola.
Winemaker Jim Moore, proprietor of L'Uvaggio, has been one of the most steadfast advocates for Italian grape varieties in California since the 1980s, when he was hired to head Robert Mondavi's La Famiglia. He works with growers in several California regions to produce wines that are faithful to their Italian inspirations, yet are uniquely Californian.
This fruit-driven red wine has decadent blackberry, cola, cherry and coffee aromas and jammy, bright marionberry, amaretto, plum and mocha flavors that are mouth-filling and have nice length.
