Origin
Nestled in Italy’s Northeast corner, the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region borders Austria to the north, Slovenia to the east and the Adriatic Sea to the south. Virtually surrounded by the Alps on three sides, this predominantly mountainous area owes much of its viticultural good fortune to the nearby Adriatic. The sea’s moderating influences contribute mightily to a surprisingly temperate region that consistently produces some of Italy’s most vibrant and prized white wines.
Pairings
A mutation of the red Pinot Noir grape, Pinot Grigio has been enjoyed for centuries, and today it is arguably the world’s most popular and widely disseminated wine. One possible explanation for this is that it is made in a variety of styles and works well with a mind-boggling array of foods. Slightly more generous interpretations like this one work well with medium-bodied dishes that feature seafood and shellfish. It also shines alongside simple pasta dishes, especially ones that are accompanied by moderately intense sauces and a sprinkling of fresh herbs. Think grilled prawns, fried calamari or linguini with clams!

Serve well chilled (45°F).
Winemaker
La Boatina’s wines are produced on a 140-acre estate located in the rolling hills between the towns of Cormons and Gorizia. In the late 1970s, the entrepreneur Loretto Pali purchased the property, which is now under a family-controlled business umbrella that includes two wine estates, a restaurant, a golf course, a resort and a grappa distillery. The group’s winemaker, Domenico Lovat, crafts refreshing and memorable wines by using only the finest grapes and state-of-the-art equipment.
The Wine
Grown and produced not far from Italy’s border with Slovenia, this lusciously scented Pinot Grigio from the 2010 vintage is medium in body and creamy in texture. Aromas of pear, underripe papaya, orange blossom and almond portend more of the same on the palate, along with a minerally spine of acidity, which gives this plump offering excellent definition and lift. This food-friendly, easy-going wine is guaranteed to charm.
