Origin

Abruzzo, a once-poor region of east-central Italy between Tuscany and the Adriatic coast, has become more prosperous in recent decades. Montepulciano wine, one of its greatest exports, has likewise enjoyed a rise in status. For a long time it was regarded as a fruity but not terribly serious wine. Today quality has improved, and Montepulciano grapes grown in Abruzzo are still hearty and down-to-earth but have become increasingly sophisticated.

Pairings

Montepulciano is a fruity wine with nuances of earth and spice. It tends to fare best with savory meat dishes, as it offers a refreshing counterpoint. Slowcooked meats, especially lamb, boar and pork, are always good matches, as are savory vegetarian dishes.

Winemaker

Fattoria La Valentina was founded in 1990 and stands today as a very modern winery. It has a markedly traditional, low-intervention approach to both farming and winemaking, with the goal of making wines that faithfully reflect the character of the region. Since 1998 the vineyards and winery have been overseen by skilled oenologist Luca D'Attoma.

The Wine

This juicy red has a complex nose of black cherry, rose petals, red licorice, menthol and coffee, and flavors of red raspberries, plums, cedar and cardamom. It has bright fresh fruit, nice acidity and moderate tannins.
