Origin
Located exactly equidistant from California’s borders with Oregon and Mexico, the Monterey AVA is a subappellation of the aptly named Central Coast region. Viticulture is focused in the Salinas Valley, which stretches nearly 100 miles from Monterey Bay to the boundary of the Paso Robles AVA . In the region’s northern portion, the cool climes, varied soils and one of the world’s longest growing seasons consistently produce ripe, concentrated Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with balanced acidity.
Pairings
This Chardonnay offers myriad pairing opportunities. Dishes with some richness help to underscore its fuller body and creamy mouthfeel. In addition to a wide array of richer seafood, shellfish and poultry dishes, it pairs nicely with simple preparations of lighter red meats such as veal and pork. Also consider light pasta or rice dishes, especially those featuring shrimp or scallops.

Serve chilled (52°F).
Winemaker
After working with indigenous farmers as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ecuador and serving as a backcountry guide in Alaska, Le P’Tit Paysan winemaker Ian Brand came to California’s Central Coast in search of the perfect wave. Instead, he found his true calling, winemaking, while working at Bonny Doon Winery in Santa Cruz. Additional experience at Big Basin Winery and Coastview Vineyard helped prepare him to craft wines under his own label. A partnership with Coastview Vineyard owners John and Julie Allen, Le P’Tit Paysan is dedicated to producing affordable and accessible wines that satisfy a sophisticated palate.
The Wine
Sourced from grapes grown in rocky, granite-based soils on the east side of the Salinas Valley (directly opposite the famed Santa Lucia Highlands AVA), the P’Tit Paysan Chardonnay features aromas and flavors of pear, slightly underripe pineapple, citrus blossom and vanilla cream. What is most impressive about this wine is the unlikely combination of generosity and restraint, which is rare in any Chardonnay, much less at this price point. The toasty wood notes from oak aging are well-integrated, and the rich texture is deftly offset by just the right amount of acidity.
