Margaret River is not only the greatest wine region in Western Australia, but it's one of the best in the world. It's a remote wine region--a three-hour drive from Perth--but well worth the trip. Cooled by ocean breezes and blessed with a unique soil series known as Wilyabrup, Margaret River produces some of the world's finest Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Shiraz. The Cabernet Sauvignon is particularly notable for its intense black fruit flavors flecked with mint and cedar.
Pairings
This complex Cabernet Sauvignon will fare best with a relatively simple red meat dish that allows the wine to shine. A grilled or otherwise simply prepared steak is ideal--either a juicy ribeye or tender filet, seasoned with sea salt and fresh pepper.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
Denis and Tricia Horgan's Leeuwin Estate is the most iconic domaine in Western Australia. The Horgans purchased the property, then a cattle ranch, in 1969. A couple of years later, Denis Horgan received a call from an American winemaker asking if he wanted to sell. The offer was from Robert Mondavi, who confided that he saw great winegrowing potential in the property. Horgan didn't sell, but he and Mondavi became fast friends, with Mondavi becoming something of a mentor to Horgan. Today, Leeuwin's highly collectible "Art Series" Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are benchmark Aussie wines.
The Wine
The 2004 "Art Series" Cabernet is a classic Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon that's just reaching early maturity now. It has aromas of bay laurel, anise seed, cedar, clove, brambly blackberry and black currant. Its intense crème de cassis, espresso, grilled meat and licorice flavors finish with supple tannins and well-integrated, toasty oak notes.
