The Margaret River wine region is located on the Western Australian coast, south of Perth. It's a lovely setting, equally popular with surfers and wine aficionados. This region is far from hot; it actually has a very moderate climate that produces first-rate Chardonnay, spicy Shiraz and outstanding Cabernet and Merlot. Leeuwin's estate vineyards are distinguished by their granite-based gravel soils that give their wines particular finesse.
This spicy, juicy red is perfectly suited for a sautéed duck breast with a fruity sauce, grilled lamb rib chops marinated in wine and bay leaf, or even a grilled steak topped with gorgonzola butter.
Leeuwin Estate is an iconic Australian winery. Denis and Tricia Horgan purchased the estate, then a cattle ranch, in 1969. A couple of years later, an American called to ask if he wanted to sell. The historic call was from Robert Mondavi, who confided to Horgan that he saw great winegrowing potential in the property. Horgan didn't sell, but he and Mondavi became fast friends and Mondavi became Horgan's mentor in the wine business. Leeuwin's meticulous vineyards are sustainably farmed, and the wines are made by the very talented Paul Atwood.
This delicious red has an inky purple color and aromas of violet, mulberry and black cherry with a whiff of eucalyptus and cracked black pepper. In the mouth it shows sweet raspberry liqueur and blood orange fruit flavors with notes of mushroom, cinnamon and black licorice. Despite its generous fruit, it has good restraint with bright acidity and moderate, fine tannins.
