Origin
Margaret River, located 200 miles south of Perth on the southwest corner of Australia, consistently produces the country's most stylish and sophisticated wines. Bordered by water on three sides, the region benefits from a combination of maritime influences and gravelly loam soils, which play host to low-yielding vines that produce fruit of unparalleled ripeness, purity and balance. Despite these remarkable conditions, viticulture was not firmly established here until the mid-1970s. Now more than 120 wineries dot the Margaret River landscape.
Pairings
As with most Chardonnays, dishes with some richness underscore the fuller body and creamy texture of this wine. In addition to full-flavored seafood, shellfish and poultry preparations, many veal and pork entrees make for a successful match, especially when prepared simply, so that the wine doesn't have to compete with overly complex ingredients. This Chardonnay not only loves butter, cream and mild cheeses, but also responds well to recipes that incorporate lightly toasted nuts, which echo its inherent flavors.

Serve chilled (52°F). Do not overchill.
Winemaker
In 1972, following an extensive search for the best place to produce varietal wines in Australia, the legendary American winemaker Robert Mondavi identified the future site of the Leeuwin estate. Originally a cattle farm, Leeuwin Estate evolved, under the direction of Denis and Tricia Horgan, with Robert Mondavi acting as a consultant and mentor. The Horgans opened their now iconic family-owned winery in 1978 and released, to enthusiastic international acclaim, their first commercial vintage the following year.
The Wine
Leeuwin concentrates on achieving complex and balanced wines through the use of both modern and traditional methods. This Chardonnay from Prelude Vineyards comes from selected blocks bearing fruits of immediately expressive character. As Meyer lemon, Bartlett pear and citrus blossom grapple for olfactory supremacy, zesty acidity lends lift and focus to a cascade of flavors, including pear, pineapple, lemon cream, cashew nut, unsalted butter and a smoky minerality. The tension between the succulent New World fruit and elevated acidity keeps the mouth-filling texture from seeming too rich.
