Coteaux du Quercy is a very small winegrowing region in southwest France, located between the two betterknown appellations of Cahors and Gaillac. There are only about 1,200 acres of vineyards in the district, which emerged as a fine wine region in the 1980s, prior to which it was renowned for its fine truffles. Cabernet Franc performs exceptionally well in the region's chalky soils, and here it is blended with Malbec and Tannat, two other popular local red grapes.
This is a versatile red appropriate for medium- to full-flavored dishes like osso buco, braised lamb shanks with Provençale herbs, coq au vin and other savory dishes with herb or mushroom accents.
Les Vignerons du Quercy is an association of dedicated local producers who joined forces to produce top-quality regional wines. The group, headed by Francis Jeansou, includes 40 vignerons in Quercy who focus on traditional local varieties and pride themselves particularly on their red wines, which tend to be a bit more elegant than those of Cahors and a bit bolder than those of Gaillac.
There's a comfortable rusticity to this red's black cherry, blackberry, garrigue herb, cigar box and bittersweet chocolate aromas. In the mouth it shows flavors of boysenberry, dried currants, forest floor, rosemary, plum and cinnamon. It is medium in weight, with a surprisingly soft finish.
