Pinot Noir is a fickle grape, yet it thrives in cool, marginally viable vineyards where the sun's heat is tempered by fog, wind and altitude. In recent years, the narrow, secluded Anderson Valley in Northern California's coastal county of Mendocino has gained popularity among Pinot Noir aficionados. Only two hours north of San Francisco, Anderson Valley's gorgeous slopes are carpeted by towering fogshrouded redwoods and a growing number of grapevines.
The wine's high notes of citrus and berry play well against richly flavored foods. The natural oils and fattiness of salmon will complement this Pinot Noir, while a juicy roasted game bird will showcase the wine's brightness.
Larry and Shirlee Londer left a life of ophthalmology in Albuquerque to make wine in Mendocino. In 1999, they broke ground in a remote part of the Anderson Valley and partnered with Greg LaFollette, one of America's most acclaimed Pinot Noir experts, who immediately recognized the potential of the Londer's site. The success of the first vintages of Londer Pinot Noir confirmed his instincts. Londer Vineyards' 15 acres are planted with five different clones of Pinot Noir. The Navarro River forms the southern boundary, which encourages cool evening fog.
Deftly straddling the line between richness and grace, this Pinot Noir has complex notes of mushroom, strawberry, Asian five-spice, Bing cherry, orange rind, forest floor and a touch of conifer. The length is succulent and smooth, with a bright note of acid keeping the wine elegant.
