Origin
Sonoma County's Russian River Valley is located north of San Francisco near the cool Pacific coast. This region is best known for its superb Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but the crisp, foggy climate also produces some outstanding Syrah. Dakine Vineyard is nestled at the bottom of an east-facing hill near the town of Healdsburg.
Pairings
Pair this Syrah with dishes featuring aromatic spices like coriander, cumin or Chinese five-spice. Peking duck is a great match, as are Moroccan-style lamb tagine or barbecued pork ribs.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
Longboard's founder and winemaker, Oded Shakked, grew up in Tel Aviv, Israel, and taught himself to surf on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. By the time he was in his 20s, Oded was earning a living making custom surfboards, and he regularly sought out bigger waves on Europe's Atlantic coast. In Portugal, he discovered red wine. Eventually, his dual passions lured him to sunny California, where he studied winemaking at U.C. Davis and established Longboard Vineyards in laid-back Sonoma County, where he makes small batches of wine by hand from select vineyards.
The Wine
When grown in cool regions like the Russian River Valley, Syrah often shows a peppery spice note and matures at lower alcohol levels. The Dakine Vineyard Syrah has aromas of black and white pepper, Mission figs, cinnamon, red currants and espresso with focused plum, raspberry, menthol and earth flavors. It has a generous mouthfeel and great overall balance.
