Origin
Situated around the town of Nantes, not far from where the Loire River meets the Atlantic Ocean, Muscadet is the westernmost winegrowing area of France's Loire Valley. The most important and highly regarded sub-appellation is Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine, which is named for two Loire River tributaries that run through it--the Sèvre and the Maine. Muscadet refers to both the region as well as the crisp and racy wine itself, which is made entirely from the Melon de Bourgogne grape.
Pairings
Few wines are more refreshing or more dominated by bracing minerality than Muscadet. These traits get the digestive juices flowing, stimulating both thirst and appetite, and make this white an outstanding aperitif as well as a versatile companion at the table. While Muscadet can offer a compelling counterpoint to some richer fish and chicken dishes, it begs for fresh shellfish of all kinds and is at its best in the company of fresh oysters. With this classic food and wine pairing, the briny liquor of the succulent oysters beautifully matches the wine's intrinsic minerality and crisp acidity.

Serve chilled (48°F).
Winemaker
Louis Métaireau was an energetic and influential vineyard owner who, beginning in the late 1960s, went on a mission to improve the reputation of the region's wines. He formed a consortium of local growers that bought and managed large vineyard holdings. They reduced yields and ushered in new cellar techniques, such as "sur lie" aging and bottling without filtration, which add richness and complexity to the wines. Over time, the group's efforts vastly enhanced the quality and consistency of Muscadet de Sèvre-et- Maine. Now, with Métaireau happily retired in Corsica, the estate is managed by his daughter, Marie-Luce, and her husband, Jean-Francois Guilbaud.
The Wine
The 30-year-old vines that produce this Petit Mouton bottling are rooted deeply in complex, rocky soils composed of mica, garnet, gneiss and amphibolite. While some of Métaireau's other offerings respond well to a decade of aging, this Petit Mouton offering is best appreciated for its youthful exuberance. Its understated, briny, minerally, citric, green apple character is invigorating and food-friendly.
