Origin
Arroyo Seco is a sub-region of Monterey County, located at the southeastern end of the Salinas Valley. It sits in a transitional micro-climate between the northern coastal end of the valley, which is dominated by cold ocean breezes coming off Monterey Bay, and the warmer inland reaches of California's Central Coast. A number of grape varieties flourish in the stony dry riverbed soils of Arroyo Seco, from Pinot Noir to Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc.
Pairings
This fruity Chenin Blanc is a great match for crab cakes with a mango salsa, smoked salmon with crème fraîche, roasted chicken with lemon and herbs, or a curried chicken salad sandwich.

Serve well chilled (47°F).
Winemaker
After graudating from law school, Marguerite Ryan, who goes by Peggy, decided that law-firm life was not for her. Instead, she moved to California and enrolled in oenology classes. She landed a job working for the famed consultant David Ramey and then trained under a succession of big names, from John Kongsgaard (Luna) to Bob Linquist (Qupé) and Michael Silacci (Opus One). Peggy Ryan focuses on making small-batch Pinot Noir from select vineyards, but she also makes fewer than 200 cases of this outstanding single-vineyard Chenin Blanc.
The Wine
Indigenous to France's Loire Valley, Chenin Blanc can be made in a wide range of styles, from dry to sweet, but it often combines floral aromas with citrusy fruit and moderate weight in the mouth. This terrific new-world example has pretty aromas of white pepper, lemon blossom, green apple and marzipan, and round, rich flavors of jasmine, pineapple and papaya with a racy, zesty finish.
