Located in the balmy Languedoc region that skirts the Mediterranean, the Mas Janeil Côtes du Roussillon is one of the warmest wine-growing areas in France and a blissfully easy place to grow grapes. Traditionally known for soft, rustic red blends based on Syrah, Grenache, Mouvedre and Carignan, the region is increasingly home to highly crafted, modern-style wines.
This full-bodied wine's rich texture and earthy, spicy flavors will match well with pork, duck or lamb. Grilling the food will highlight the wine's savory qualities, although roasting and sautéing will work beautifully, too. For a simpler pairing, try a dense, spice-laden duck liver pâté.
Brothers Francois and Jacques Lurton built boutique wineries in Argentina, Chile, Spain, Portugal and France, having learned the trade from their father, Andre Lurton, an icon of the Bordeaux wine world. The ancient Grenache vineyard that produces the "Le Tiradou" is situated at the foot of the isolated Château de Quéribus, a ruined castle dating back to the mid-1600s and listed as a historical monument by the French Ministry of Culture.
Clearly reflecting the rugged land from which it hails, this Grenache wine has notes of lavender, rosemary, fig, plum, leather, cedar and cherry. Balanced and full-bodied, this wine ends on notes of warm strawberry and dark spice.
