Bolgheri, located on Tuscany's western coast, gained international prominence with the emergence of the first "SuperTuscan" wine, Sassicaia. The warm region is best known for producing reds that combine French grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah with small amounts of Sangiovese, Tuscany's indigenous specialty. Whites from this area, however, have been improving. Vermentino does particularly well in this region, where most reds and whites are blended from two or more grapes.
Seafood is a good match for this unoaked, fresh, slightly herbaceous white, especially when prepared with fresh herbs or vegetables. Ceviche with mango and cilantro is an excellent accompaniment, as would be a caprese salad or green salad with fruit. Young, creamy cheeses like brie or chèvre make a fantastic pairing.
Michele Satta and his wife, Lucia, began building their family estate in 1984 with the purchase of a small property in Castagneto, in the wine region of Bolgheri. They planted their first vines in 1991, at a time when Bolgheri's reputation as a wine region was on the rise. Over the years, the couple has acquired and planted about 60 acres of vineyards while raising six children. The Satta family produces a wide variety of red, white and rosé wines including this complex, refreshing gem.
This juicy white blend has spring-like basil, lemon, baked apple and tropical fruit aromas. Its generous citrus, rosemary, pineapple and mineral flavors have terrific body but finish zesty and dry with delicate herb and mineral notes.
