Origin
Located on the east coast of the South Island, Marlborough is one of New Zealand’s sunniest and driest areas. Shallow, stony, low-fertility soils reduce vigor, decrease yields and produce delightfully crisp, aromatic wines. Serious planting did not begin here until the late 1970s, but since then unexpected international demand has fueled rapid expansion. Having established itself as a source of affordable, world-class Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough is now making its name in other varietals, notably Pinot Noir.
Pairings
Showcasing Pinot Noir’s charming and seductive nature, the 2009 Momo offers exceptional flexibility with a huge spectrum of ingredients and cooking methods. It promises to stand up nicely to poultry and lighter red meats, while not overwhelming many seafood and vegetarian dishes. Cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, ginger and coriander echo the wine’s inherent spiciness, while fresh herbs and garlic play to its earthy side.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
Momo is the second label from one of New Zealand’s standout producers, Seresin, which was founded in 1996 by Michael Seresin. Having left New Zealand in the 1960s to pursue a career in cinematography, Seresin ended up living in Italy and cultivating a great love of wine and food. He considered developing a wine project in Italy, but by this time New Zealand’s wine renaissance was in full bloom. On a visit back home, he fell in love with Marlborough and founded his winery there, producing wine that has been lauded for its elegant, restrained, European style and versatility at the table.
The Wine
Momo Pinot Noir is made with biodynamically farmed grapes from Seresin’s vineyards and, in some cases, from select growers’ properties that are being converted over to organic farming. The 2009 Pinot was picked, sorted and de-stemmed by hand. It shows lovely, vibrant red berry fruit, accented with hints of dried herbs and stones. It has great, bright acidity and a long and buoyant finish of fresh berries.
