Origin
The Mosel River winds its way through some of the world's steepest and northernmost vineyard land. While the geography and latitude are important factors, Mosel's unique sense of place is most clearly defined by fast-draining, blue slate soils and steep hillside vineyards. Nick Köwerich's property sits across from the village of Leiwen, where the meanandering Mosel completes a sharp hairpin turn, giving his vineyard a highly coveted southern exposure.
Pairings
Bright forward fruit, crisp acidity, purity of flavor and low alcohol are all factors that make Riesling arguably the most versatile grape variety for pairing with food. German Rieslings range from wrenchingly dry to treacly sweet. This bottling falls somewhere in between and is well suited to spicy Asian cuisine, as well as more simply prepared seafood and poultry dishes. Its high acidity deftly counterbalances rich sauces and fattier foods. It is also an excellent end-of-the-meal closer, especially when served with creamy, full-flavored cheeses, and fresh or dried fruit.

Serve very well chilled (42°F).
Winemaker
While many of his contemporaries left the area for more lucrative careers in the city, Nick Köwerich studied enology and viticulture and returned to the vineyards his family has long cultivated. There he joins a new generation of young, determined winemakers who craft distinguished wines that he convincingly insists "cannot be reproduced anywhere else in the world." With the support of his wife, Annette, and his three daughters, Nick currently makes only three wines, each a different interpretation of the noble Riesling grape.
The Wine
The "Für Träumer und Helden" (for dreamers and heros) is a product of 50 to 70 percent slate slopes in the Laurentiuslay district. Aromas of pear, white peach, apple and a pinch of cinnamon are all shrouded with a veil of wet stone. The palate is rich and vibrant with very pure flavors of nectarine, apple, honey and plenty of slate. The wine is off-dry (slightly sweet), but the tension between the lush fruit and the brisk acidity keeps it taught and lively.
