Origin
Napa Valley is the heart and soul of the California wine industry. Running north to south, the valley is 34 miles long and defined by mountain ranges and its proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Its temperate climate, coupled with over 30 different soil types, make Napa Valley one of the world’s premier wine regions. Within “The Valley,” there are 16 distinct American Viticultural Areas (AVA s), each with a unique microclimate, running from warm, dry Calistoga at the valley’s northern end to the cool, windy and foggy hills of Carneros, set right up against San Pablo Bay.
Pairings
It’s hard to top a charcoal-grilled steak with a Napa Cabernet Franc like this one. For another great match, try lamb loin chops marinated in red wine and bay leaves, then grilled. The minty perfume of this Napa red pairs very well with fresh herbs.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Decant for one hour before serving.
Winemaker
Owl Ridge was founded by John Tracy, a former technology executive who got into wine in 2001 when the land he bought for his home in Western Sonoma County happened to have a vineyard on it. And thus retirement turned into a new career. Rather than sell the grapes, he partnered with Joe Otos, a young, ambitious winemaker (and a veteran of Ravenswood) to found Willowbrook Cellars, which specializes in Pinot Noir. The next year he created Owl Ridge, which focuses on Cabernet Sauvignon and its correlates.
The Wine
Cabernet Franc is beloved by many winemakers, but doesn’t often receive star billing because it’s a difficult cultivar—Cabernet Sauvignon is much easier to grow. Nevertheless, for those who are willing to put in the work, Cabernet Franc offers a slightly different palate, bringing in an earthy, herbal complexity atop gorgeous deep-red fruit. This wine, from the northern end of Napa Valley around Calistoga, shows those characteristics, layered over a rich, fruit-driven body.
