Origin
Beginning 200 miles southwest of Paris, the main part of Burgundy (excluding Chablis way over to the northwest), stretches through east-central France from Dijon to Lyon. Encompassing 385 villages and 99 different wine appellations, Burgundy is home to over 70,000 acres of wine grapes. Bourgogne is a general designation for wines produced anywhere in the Burgundy region.
Pairings
This Chardonnay offers myriad pairing opportunities. It’s a perfect match with light and delicate foods, such as raw or lightly cooked shellfish like oysters, crab and prawns, but promises not to shy away from richer seafood dishes. Also consider fish pâté, salmon terrine and lighter pastas, especially those featuring shellfish or spring vegetables. While substantial enough to complement simply prepared poultry dishes, or even Burgundy’s classic baked escargot in garlic butter, this lively wine seems best suited to answer the call of the sea.

Serve chilled (52°F).
Winemaker
Founded in 1990, Domaine Michèle and Patrice Rion is a small, family-run winery located near the slopes of Nuits- Saint-Georges. The pair began with just 2.5 acres of vineyards, but their estate holdings now include 13 acres spread across five different appellations. For 23 years, Patrice, the oldest son of a local winemaking family, made the wine at Domaine Daniel Rion & Fils. Since 2000 he has worked full time on his own endeavors. While focusing on top-quality village and premier cru wines, Michèle and Patrice also produce more affordable Bourgogne wines from purchased grapes, all of which are personally selected by Patrice.
The Wine
Incorporating small amounts of estategrown fruit, this 2009 Bourgogne blanc is made primarily from grapes purchased from two vineyard sources in the Côte de Beaune, both of which are farmed biodynamically. Made from 100 percent Chardonnay, this lovely entry-level white Burgundy offers remarkable depth, complexity and value. Dynamic scents of baked apple, citrus blossom and unsalted butter give way to understated but complex flavors featuring lemon custard, tangerine, butterscotch and mineral. The finish is penetrating and surprisingly long.
