Origin
Oregon is celebrated for the Pinot Noir that issues from its most famous region, the Willamette Valley, which is known for its low hills and Burgundian vintages. But all the attention on Willamette obscures the fact that Oregon has several other highly promising growing areas where the damp, cool climate doesn’t dominate. This wine comes both from rocky territories in Oregon’s rugged south lands as well as from the dry, windy valleys in Oregon’s northern Columbia Gorge. These areas are too warm for Pinot Noir but cool enough to get the perfect expression from Syrah.
Pairings
The 2007 Penner-Ash Syrah, with its blend of Old and New World character, offers much culinary interest for its ability to partner with rich braised foods and a diverse array of grilled meats. While it can easily share the table with full-flavored preparations like rosemary-rubbed leg of lamb, it has enough restraint to not steamroll subtler dishes like roasted duck breast or pork chops. Vegetarians will appreciate how it complements grilled eggplant, mushrooms and zucchini, as well as many types of cheese, especially those crusted with herbs or dusted with ash.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
One of Oregon’s most famous winemakers, Lynn Penner-Ash made her name first in California before coming to Oregon to become the winemaker at Rex Hill. She’s still known for Pinot Noir, which she makes with her husband, Ron, in a beautiful hilltop winery in the Willamette Valley. Curiosity has always been one of Penner-Ash’s driving traits, however, so it’s not surprising that after years of focusing solely on Pinot Noir, she turned her attention to other regions and other grapes. “Syrah allows us to try our hand at something that’s very different from Pinot Noir and see if our skills translate,” she says. In the case of this luscious Syrah those skills have translated seamlessly.
The Wine
Syrah is often thought to have two sides, and this wine captures them both. Fully fruited, with deep, intense notes of plum and blackberry, the wine also captures Syrah’s alluring savory side, blending in hints of pepper, violet, cedar, coffee and spice. Well-managed time in barrel has left the wine with a pleasing but not overwhelming veneer of oak that softened its dense tannins and beautifully rounded out its structure.
