Origin
Located 1,000 miles south of Auckland on New Zealand’s South Island, exactly midway between the equator and the South Pole, Central Otago is the world’s southernmost wine region. An inland area surrounded by mountain ranges (where the “Lord of The Rings” trilogy was filmed), Central Otago is the closest thing New Zealand has to a continental climate, and it is one of the country’s hottest, coldest and driest regions. Since the area’s first commercial offering was released in 1987, these unique conditions have consistently produced some of the most exciting Pinot Noirs in the world.
Pairings
This Peregrine Pinot Noir offers great flexibility at the table. While its generous nature and strong structure lean toward meats and feathered game, it is also light enough to pair quite nicely with almost all things poultry, as well as some richer seafood preparations, such as salmon and ahi tuna. Its inherent spice character can offer additional versatility with the salty and sweet flavors often found in Chinese, Thai, Indian and Japanese cuisine.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
Lindsay McLachlan and Greg Hay, Peregrine’s passionate owners, are determined to consistently produce wines that are not only representative of the Central Otago region, but also among New Zealand’s very best. To that end, they use only carefully selected, handharvested fruit from 11 different sites throughout the Lowburn, Bendigo and Gibbston subregions. They also hired Nadine Cross, a former accountant, who received her post-graduate degree in oenology and viticulture before going on an around-the-world winemaking spree that included work in California, France’s Loire Valley and Marlborough, New Zealand.
The Wine
A product of low-yielding vines in Cromwell Basin and Gibbston Valley, the Peregrine Pinot Noir was pressed into French oak barrels, where it spent 10 months before being racked, lightly filtered and bottled. It features classy Burgundian styling, yet it is riper and more concentrated. Vibrant aromas of dusty cherry, ripe plum, earth and Chinese five spice all gently jostle for olfactory supremacy. On the palate, expect spicy black cherry, earthy red plum (with skin) and a long, supple finish. At once powerful and elegant, the wine displays a strong fruit emphasis that emerges more fully as it breathes. Serving in large glasses and decanting an hour or two before serving is recommended.
