Origin
The rugged schist slopes of Portugal's Douro Valley may be the most daunting terroir in the world of wine. If it weren't for the intense and delicious wines hailing from these rocky terraces, no one would bother growing anything there. Mature vines often yield less than 1 ton of grapes per acre--less than a third of a good Napa Valley vineyard. Assorted native varieties like Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Cao and many others are co-fermented to make powerful, concentrated red wines: vintage or tawny ports, or distinctly Portuguese dry table wines.
Pairings
Enjoy this exceptional wine with red meat. Smoky barbecued beef ribs are a good match, as are grilled ribeye or braised lamb.

Serve at cellar temperature (59°F).
Winemaker
References to the legendary vineyard Quinta do Crasto date back to 1615. When the Marquês de Pombal set about demarcating the official Opporto production region, he marked the best quality sites with granite posts called "feitoria." One of these, dating back to 1758, still stands at Quinta do Crasto. In 1981, Leonor Roquette (daughter of Fernando de Almeida) and her husband, Jorge Roquette, assumed a majority stake and management control over the estate. With the help of their sons, Miguel and Tomás, they began remodeling and expanding the vineyards. This is their flagship table wine.
The Wine
This benchmark Douro red, a blend of 25 to 30 different Portuguese varietals, has fresh violet and lavender aromatic highlights and deeper blueberry, blackberry, plum, black pepper and bittersweet chocolate aromas. It has a spicy center of black fruit accented with graphite, espresso, hibiscus and mineral notes through a very long finish.
