Origin
Just across the Bass Straight from Tasmania, Victoria is mainland Australia's southernmost wine region. And, Rutherglen, located 130 miles northeast of Melbourne, has always been the heart and soul of Victoria's wine industry. Since vines were first planted in the 1850s, Rutherglen has enjoyed international demand for its sumptuous dessert wines, but has now emerged as a serious player in the world of dry wine production.
Pairings
This Mourvedre-based blend's dark, meaty flavors make it an ideal accompaniment to red meat, game and other full-flavored fare, and its rich, fruit-driven character opens up a world of pairing possibilities with spicier dishes. But, for all of its intensity, it remains light on its feet and capable of tackling a wide array of foods. A few ingredients to which it responds favorably are roasted garlic, mushrooms, rosemary, thyme, lavender, green peppercorn, and, of course, bacon.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
Marc Scalzo joined Rutherglen Estates in 2008, bringing 12 years of winemaking experience, including a seven-year stint at Brown Brothers. Scalzo has been instrumental in developing Rutherglen Estates's expanding portfolio of alternative dry wine varietals.
The Wine
This red blend is named for the Burgoyne family, whose 1890s vineyard site provides the grapes to make this gregarious blend of Mourvedre (60 percent), Shiraz (20 percent) and Grenache (20 percent). The wine offers a host of dark fruit and earthy flavors. Baked plum, blackberry and black currant are woven in beautifully with spicy, herbal elements including black licorice, clove, tobacco, smoked meat and a touch of eucalyptus. This wine is medium- to full-bodied, with a lively juiciness, balanced tannins and a long, satisfying finish. The nine to 12 months in French oak barrels was time well spent, adding complexity and roundness.
