Origin
With over 535,000 acres planted to vines, 3,400 bonded wineries and 113 federally approved American Viticultural Areas, California accounts for 90 percent of all wine produced in the United States. And— after France, Italy and Spain—it squeezes out more fermented grape juice than any country in the world. Since wine was first made from the Mission grape in 1782 by Fathers Pablo de Mugartegui and Gregorio Amurrio, California is now home to over 110 different grape varieties, including Syrah and Grenache.
Pairings
Bold flavors and just about any herbs tend to suit Syrah-based blends quite nicely. When combined with the generous, velvety texture of Grenache, Syrah can provide a tasty backdrop for red meat, game and other full-flavored fare. This bottling of Sans Permis is softer and rounder than many full-bodied reds and does not demand ultra-rich fare to balance out its rougher edges. It can pair just as comfortably with roasted veal or pork as with grilled lamb or beef.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
Sans Permis was established in 2004 by George Van Duzer (of Turley and Marcassin fame) and a small group of partners. Sourcing grapes from across the state, they set out with the noble goal of exploring the potential of California’s vast viticultural landscape. “Sans Permis” is French for “without license,” but Van Duzer saw it as a “way of thinking, a systematic view that respects and acknowledges tradition and standards, without relinquishing creativity or a sense of humor.” Initially, his vision appeared to be coming into focus: the critics went wild and the first releases sold out quickly. But, sadly, a year later the company folded and the remaining inventory was sold out of bankruptcy.
The Wine
As the saying goes, “One man’s loss is another man’s gain,” and this 2006 vintage of La Petite Colline is now offered at nearly half of its original retail price. Comprised of grapes from California’s South Coast and North Coast AVAs, this voluptuous red wine is a 50-50 blend of Grenache and Syrah. It is lush and highly textured with opulent blackberry and black cherry fruit supported by background flourishes of roasted meat, earth, smoke and assorted baking spices. Produced without fining agents or filtration, some bottles may reveal fine sediment. This is, as the winemaker notes, “naturally occurring” and “an integral part of this wine’s ultimate character and beauty.”
