This refreshing white wine comes from a small plot of Pinot Blanc vines that were planted by John Fetzer in 1973 and are now farmed by Bernie Orsi. The vineyard is just outside the town of Hopland in Mendocino County, a two-and-a-half-hour drive north from San Francisco. Just north of Sonoma County, Mendocino County is a rugged region dominated by third- and fourth-generation grape farmers who are almost all committed to sustainable growing techniques.
A Pinot Blanc like this one, with great natural acidity, is a good foil for a citrus, fennel, goat cheese and crouton salad, or chilled seafood dishes like shrimp cocktail or hamachi crudo
Skylark is a small-production wine company owned by partners John Lancaster, the longtime wine director of San Francisco's famed Boulevard restaurant, and one of his sommeliers, Robert Perkins, who is also an accomplished painter. Over the years, they've developed relationships with superb North Coast vineyards, which supply the fruit for Skylark's three single vineyard, Rhône-inspired Syrahs and this lovely Pinot Blanc.
Fermented in a combination of stainless steel and neutral French oak barrels, Skylark's 2008 Pinot Blanc has sprightly floral, spearmint and Meyer lemon aromas and brisk Mandarin orange, lemon-lime and mineral flavors, with a bright, zesty finish.
