Origin
Bennett Valley is a gently sloping, upland valley nestled between three mountain peaks in eastern Sonoma County. Part of the greater Sonoma Valley appellation, it overlaps portions of both Sonoma Mountain and the Sonoma Coast AVAs. Its well-drained volcanic and alluvial soils combine with cool marine breezes and early-morning fog to create ideal conditions for growing exceptional, cool-climate Syrah.
Pairings
A carnivore's delight, this Syrah craves full-flavored red meat: everything from rich lamb braises and venison stews to slow-cooked brisket and charcoalgrilled steaks. While quite at home with more prosaic fare like burgers, meatloaf and pot roast, this wine won't shy away from boldly flavored animal protein, and neither should you. Consider Mongolian barbeque, tandoori beef, Mexican mole, or perhaps something a little less flamboyantly spiced, like grilled lamb kebabs marinated in olive oil, lemon juice, rosemary and paprika.

Serve at cool room temperature (62°F).
Winemaker
The husband-and-wife team of Thomas Brocker and Alicia Covarrubias founded Slanted House Winery in 2005. Together, they are dedicated to making handcrafted wines that emphatically express varietal- and vineyard-specific characteristics. Convinced that wine is "made in the vineyard," they work closely with growers who share their passion for producing the very best wines possible. The words "small production" are bandied about a lot these days, but, having produced than 100 cases of the Dry Stack Syrah made, Slanted House gives genuine meaning to the term.
The Wine
Bennett Valley's unique terroir produced a refined yet concentrated wine that exhibits layered aromas and flavors of blackberry, cassis, black plum, raw beef, smoked bacon, tar, lavender blossom, rosemary and white pepper. This rich, succulent, benchmark Syrah will drink well for the next five years, but why wait? A little aeration will enhance short-term enjoyment, so decant this Syrah an hour or two before serving, or pour it into large, appropriately shaped glasses...;and let the swirling begin!
