Origin
Covering an area of 500,000 acres, California’s Sonoma Coast appellation is the United States’ largest and most diverse American Viticultural Area (AVA). The region, designed to include many of California’s coldest sites, runs north from the Sonoma-Marin County line along the Pacific coast to Mendocino County’s southern border. Stretching inland as far as 40 miles in places, the Sonoma Coast overlaps parts of other cool-climate AVAs, such as the Russian River Valley, Green Valley, Chalk Hill and Carneros.
Pairings
Dishes with some richness underscore this wine’s fuller body and creamy texture. In addition to full-flavored seafood, shellfish and poultry preparations, many veal and pork entrees make for a successful match, especially when prepared simply. This Sonoma Coast Chardonnay adores butter, cream and mild cheeses, and responds well to recipes that incorporate lightly toasted nuts. For more daring matches, consider pumpkin curry; a salad tossed with crab, mango and avocado; or seared ahi tuna with fresh corn and crispy pancetta.

Serve chilled (48°F).
Winemaker
A legendary brand manager, John Drady spent much of his career developing and marketing wine labels for others. But in 2002, it was time to create one of his own. Honoring the Pacific Ocean and its surrounding landscape, he and his wife, Barbara, founded Sonoma Coast Vineyards. They immediately partnered with fourth-generation Sonoma County native Anthony Austin, who brought considerable cool climate winemaking experience from the decade he spend crafting the wines at Firestone Vineyards.
The Wine
As if the frigid Sonoma Coast conditions were not abusive enough, thin, rocky soils with high-density spacing further stress these poor vines—all in the name of reduced yields and increased ripeness and concentration. But this 2009 Chardonnay seems to justify such botanical cruelty, with its nuances of brioche, crème brulee and toasty oak wrapped around a core of citrus and tropical fruits. Notes of green apple, underripe pear and buttered toast also make an appearance. While quite satisfying as a stand-alone wine, its bright acidity and a complex flavor profile also ensure that it will make an ideal accompaniment to food.
