Origin
The Franken (Franconia) region of Germany is not as well known as it should be. Recognized for being somewhat of an outlier in Germany, it produces the most earthy, masculine wines in the country. Unlike most other parts of Germany, Riesling is not the dominant grape here; that distinction goes to Müller-Thurgau. The Franken region is centered around the town of Würzburg in Bavaria and follows the bends in the Main River. The continental climate here produces some of Germany’s best wines, including whites of great minerality.
Pairings
Because of its low alcohol, high acidity and pronounced fruit, a crisp blend like the Binz+Bratt can pair well with foods that most wines can’t, including poultry, fish and vegetables as well spicy southeast Asian and Indian food. This wine is also wonderful with pork and cured meats. Its unusual combination of fruit and earth also make it a refreshing match for savory dishes featuring wild herbs and mushrooms, as well.

Serve chilled (47°F).
Winemaker
This wine comes from two friends in different countries. Joachim Binz is from Germany and has been in the wine business since he was 17. Today he runs his own business exporting high-quality German wines. Thomas Bratt lives in Sweden and founded a successful wine importing house when he was in his late 30s. The two met in the early ‘90s, though the first vintage of their wine was not produced until 2008. The two friends believe that high-quality wine should also be simply pleasurable to drink. They like to say that they didn’t put their names on the bottle for personal prestige, but rather to underscore their personal commitment to what they sell.
The Wine
Named for the region it comes from, this wine is a blend of Franken’s top three white grapes. Müller-Thurgau gets the biggest proportion, though this versatile and fruity, if often undistinguished, grape is not the star of the show. That honor belongs to Silvaner, an ancient variety that reaches more glorious expressions here than anywhere else. Earthy and mineral are the terms usually used to describe it, though it’s also known for its purity and intensity. Bacchus is a flavorful, exuberant grape typically blended with Müller-Thurgau. Together, the grapes make for an ideal drinking wine, as found here: punchy with bright, exotic fruit and a long, ringing finish.
