Origin
Nestled in the northwest corner of Italy, Piedmont, which means “foot of the mountain” in Italian, is bordered by the Swiss Alps to the north and French Alps to the west. Castellinaldo, home of Cascina del Pozzo, is a grape-growing community in Piedmont’s Barbera d’Alba production zone. While Barbera is widely planted and accounts for over half of the red wine vines grown in northern Italy, it is thought to reach it greatest expression in the relatively cool climes and sandy, lime-rich soils of Alba.
Pairings
Barbera’s relatively high acidity, moderate tannins and lower alcohol levels can support a huge array of foods. It’s a natural with animal protein, from cold cuts and salumi to thick stews and roasts. Barbera is an excellent partner to pizza and tomato-based pasta dishes. The grape also has a natural affinity for edible fungi—from porcini mushrooms to white and black truffle. And don’t forget the cheese! Fontina, Piave and Teleggio work especially well, along with the northern Italian dish fonduta, which is a variation on the traditional Swiss cheese fondue.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
The Marchisio family has owned and operated Cascina del Pozzo for three generations. Flavio Machisio took over the property from his father in 1973, and today the estate is tended by his children, Gianmario, Denise and Stefano. While specializing in producing world class Barbera, they also bottle small amounts of Nebbiolo and Arneis.
The Wine
When yields are reduced and the grapes picked at optimum ripeness, Barbera provides everything that winemakers, and consumers, love: deep color, solid flavor impact, balanced tannins and high levels of acidity. And, true to form, Cascina del Pozzo’s Lucrezia delivered the goods in 2007. Pungent aromas of black plum, black raspberry, violet and lightly singed meat set the stage for the rich palate where notes of leather, tar and vanilla accentuate low-toned black and blue fruit flavors.
