Origin
Yecla, a coastal region in southeastern Spain where the hot, windy climate is tempered by breezes off the Mediterranean Sea, is ideal for winegrowing. Rich in limestone and low in nutrients, the soils here encourage the vines, many of which are between 50 and 100 years old, to dig deep for sustenance, meaning that they absorb more elements from the ground and put greater energy into ripening their fruit. Sun-loving Monastrell, known as Mourvèdre in France, thrives here and has become the region’s signature red grape, making meaty wines with luscious fruit flavors.
Pairings
The Solanera’s smooth texture will be enhanced by poultry and light meat dishes, such as veal or pork. Roast chicken is a great choice for weeknight meals, while duck or turkey confit would make for a richer pairing. The wine has enough deep fruit, though, to work well with leaner cuts of beef or lamb, too. Serve crispy herb-roasted potatoes alongside and finish with a hard aged cheese for a lovely Spanishinspired meal.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
The family-owned Bodegas Castaño began to make its name in the early 1980s, though its roots go back several decades earlier. Ramón Castaño Santa, the estate’s founder, had vineyards and a winery dating back to the 1950s. At that time Yecla was not a place of consequence on the world wine map, and most producers could make good livings simply selling their wine in bulk. That began to change in the 1980s, due in part to the efforts of Castaño Santa, who decided to create his own brand along with his sons. The results have been phenomenal, as the family’s unwavering commitment to the Monastrell grape and the Yecla terroir have helped bring both to the world stage.
The Wine
Supple on the palate, this blend is notable for its superb balance: no quality stands out over any other. Succulent plum aromas and a note of citrus zest are well integrated on the nose. The wine’s flavors are characterized by layered black fruits and accents of cocoa, smoke, violets and coffee. The wine packs a lot of flavor into a package that is ultimately medium-bodied, offering a vibrantly fruit-forward mid-palate that gives way to a rush of fine, succulent tannins.
