Origin
The name Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which means “new house of the Pope” in French, dates back to 1308 when Clement V relocated the papacy to Avignon. This Southern Rhône Valley appellation is renowned for its near-perfect weather and profoundly rocky soils. Red wine accounts for approximately 97 percent of the region’s production. While 13 grape varieties are sanctioned for inclusion in the regional blend, Grenache, which represents over 70 percent of all vines planted, is considered the most important.
Pairings
This wine’s voluptuous flavors of dark fruit, assorted spices, light game, smoke and citrus make for a broad array of intriguing pairing opportunities with red meat, game and other full-flavored fair. But, given its Grenache-based elegance and freshness, this wine is also magnificent with pork, veal and poultry.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
Purchased by Anne and Jean-Pierre Hugues in 2008, the 50-acre Château Husson estate stretches across the eastern slope of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The Hugues recognized the estate’s potential and immediately began renovating the cellar and rehabilitating sections of vineyard. While it is planted primarily to Grenache, blendable amounts of Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault are grown, too. The winery also produces tiny amounts of barrel-aged white wine, which is a blend of Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Bourboulenc.
The Wine
Grapes for this blend come from 40-year-old vines planted in the chalky clay soil of the estate’s Les Saumades parcel. The finished wine was aged in concrete tanks for 12 months before bottling. The resulting wine is a bright and vivacious interpretation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The sweet nose of black raspberry and black plum is intermixed with hints of white pepper, licorice and dried citrus rind. The palate is loaded with the juicy fresh fruit flavors of blackberry, black cherry and warm plum. With time in the glass, it opens with beautiful elegance, restrained power and layers of flavorful charm.
