Costières de Nîmes surrounds the ancient city of Nîmes in the Languedoc region of south-central France. The vineyards of this region date back 2,000 years to the time when the area was governed from Rome. Veterans of Caesar's Roman legions were given plots of land in the area as a reward for dedicated service. Rhone varieties like Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre flourish here, planted side by side with the historic staple, Carignan, and the wines are often infused with the aromas of rosemary, thyme and other herbs that grow wild in the area.
This wine will complement grilled meat, from relatively gamey lamb to beef or pork, particularly with recipes that incorporate pepper or other spices and dried herbs.
This 170-acre estate has been in the hands of the Teulon family since 1703 and is farmed using traditional methods with wisdom acquired over centuries. Current owner Philippe Teulon earned a degree in enology before taking over the estate in 1975, and today he farms the property with the help of his two sons.
The blend is a traditional Southern French combination that's tried and true. Syrah gives the wine spice, silky texture and savory notes; Grenache adds plush red fruit; and Mourvedre contributes dark plum notes and a tarry structure. It has aromas of bittersweet chocolate, blackberry, black pepper, sage and thyme, and generous baked plum, black cherry, licorice and tar flavors finishing with a lifted dried herb note.
