Origin
An expansive region in the middle of the Loire Valley, Anjou produces more wines of different styles and grapes than any other part of this vast appellation in northwestern France. But when it comes to white wine, the dominant grape here is the Loire’s most distinctive, Chenin Blanc. This idiosyncratic variety, with its racy acidity and panoply of flavors, thrives in the mild continental climate, which is moderated by influences from the nearby Atlantic. Soils here vary between calcareous and schistous, both of which bring out the grape’s most captivating qualities.
Pairings
Dry Chenin Blancs like this Anjou pair well with Asian foods, particularly fish and vegetable-oriented dishes that have a touch of spice. Alternatively, the wine’s pronounced texture and acidic edge will make a great partner to rich, creamy foods by complementing their texture while cutting the richness. Try salmon with creamy mushroom sauce or trout in a butter-lemon sauce. Light poultry dishes or salads that incorporate vinaigrettes or tangy cheese, such as fresh chèvre, will balance the wine’s acidity and richness.

Serve chilled (47°F).
Winemaker
An ancient estate, Château de la Roulerie dates back to the 11th century, though it has changed hands many times since then. Today it is run by the passionate and capable Philippe Germain, the latest in a long line of winemakers. Philippe’s father purchased Château de la Roulerie in 1996. Germain has made many improvements, notably moving winemaking back to the château in 2008 after 20 years of having it made at another estate. Germain is also in the process of converting his vineyards to organic or biodynamic viticulture, both popular among the vanguard in the Loire, as they emphasize purity and expression in the resulting wines.
The Wine
Though by law Anjou Blanc need only be 80 percent Chenin Blanc (with Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay allowed to fill the balance), Germain believes mightily in his Chenin and thus uses it exclusively in this wine, which is sourced from schist-heavy soils on a sloped vineyard in the middle of the region. Fermentation is done in large, neutral oak casks to round out Anjou’s often rather spiky, angular Chenin Blanc profile. The wine is sharply dry, but not aggressively so. Aromas run from pear skins and acacia to honeysuckle and underripe pineapple. Complex and expansive in the mouth, the wine boasts flavors like Fuji apple, Asian pear, honeycomb, almond, pistachio and stony minerality.
