Origin
Wines classified as Bordeaux Supe´rieur come from more selective plots of land and older vines than simple Bordeaux A.O.C. wines. Bordeaux Supe´rieur is generally a bit more concentrated, with deeper flavors, more complexity and the structure for longevity in the cellar. This wine comes from the eastern reaches of Bordeaux, where Merlot flourishes in soils comprised mostly of clay and rock with high iron content.
Pairings
This Merlot-based Bordeaux is a terrifically versatile food wine, equally well suited to grilled steak and lamb rib chops or rotisserie chicken with mushrooms. Its silken texture, however, also makes it a match for tenderer, slow-cooked dishes like braised lamb shanks or long-simmered short ribs with fresh herbs.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
The Commanderie can trace its history back to the 13th century, when the knights of St. John of Jerusalem created their powerful military and religious brotherhood during the Crusades. While none of the medieval buildings remain, the estate’s winemaking tradition does. Held by the Comin family for two centuries, the property has become known as one of finest wine estates in the Entre-Deux-Mers region, where its combination of clay and limestone soils brings unparalleled depth of flavor to Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, without sacrificing any of the varieties’ inherent grace.
The Wine
2009 was an excellent vintage for Bordeaux, evident here in the blackberry, black currant, cedar, leather and graphite aromas. Ripe fruit subsumes the mid-palate, reaching to the back of the tongue with a long, vibrant finish. While the wine has plenty of structure and concentration for short-term aging, it isn’t at all heavy and is already drinking superbly.
