Origin
Located in southwest France and stretching inland from the Mediterranean Sea to the southern limits of the Rhône Valley, Corbières is arid, rocky and remote. Its terrain is the very vision of classic southern France— craggy cliffs and stony hillsides are dotted with gnarled old grapevines, fig and olive trees, and wild herbs. The story of Corbières has been one of France’s great case studies in revitalization, as its wines—once written off as rustic, simple and cheap—have been improving under a new generation of quality-driven producers who are learning how to coax the brilliance out of these rugged terroirs.
Pairings
The plump texture, intense herb-flecked flavors and molded tannins of the Domaine Sainte Croix Magneric bring to mind hearty dishes from the South of France, such as lamb with pistou, chicken with a rich tapenade or a grand cassoulet. Stews, ragouts and other braised dishes of poultry, duck, veal or lamb will make great textural complements to this wine. Accent flavors of Mediterranean herbs and olives, as well as sweetly pungent ingredients like garlic and onions, will play to the wine’s savory side.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
Domaine Sainte Croix is owned and operated by the English husband-andwife team of Jon and Elizabeth Bowen, who gained winemaking experience around the world before they decided to cast their lot with the under-realized potential of Corbières. The estate’s 32 acres are composed of a great variety of soils, running from parcels of steelblue limestone to a sandy, gravelly clay peppered with quartz crystals, to layers of flaky schist. As in most of the region, the vines here ripen in a hybrid climate where cooler maritime weather clashes with the heat and dryness of the rocky inland cliffs.
The Wine
Magneric is named for the hilltop parcel of old-vine Grenache that’s one of the more expressive components of this wine. Carignan makes for the slight majority of the blend, providing structure, robustness and deep, earthy notes of cassis and black plum. Round, deeply flavored and gorgeously textured, this red blend has polished, structured tannins and excellent balance. The fruit tastes like warm blackberries—ripe but not heavy—while accent notes of black olives, green herbs and fresh lavender add a savory complexity.
