Winemaker
During his first visit in the late 1980s,
Hervé Joyaux Fabre, a wine merchant
from Bordeaux, fell in love with Argentina’s
Mendoza region. He was seduced
by its natural beauty and convinced that
the area had the potential to produce
world-class wine, especially from ancient
plantings of the Malbec grape. He began
to snap up property and, over the course
of 20 years, amassed vineyard holdings
in excess of 200 acres. In 1992, he and
his wife, Diane Monheim, decided to
apply their considerable wine experience
more directly and founded Fabre
Montmayou. Surrounded by 90 acres of
estate vineyards, the winery is located 12
miles north of the city of Mendoza, at an
elevation of 3,600 feet.
The Wine
The high-altitude vineyards of Luján
de Cuyo benefit from deep, mineralrich
soils; warm, sunny days; and cool
nights. A byproduct of these ideal
growing conditions, this 2010 Cabernet
Sauvignon features aromas and flavors
of black currant, black plum, cracked
pepper, rosemary, cedar and orange
rind. It is juicy and fruity on the palate,
with oak-derived hints of vanilla, smoke,
coffee and chocolate. The grapes were
hand-harvested from mature vines, all of
which are at least 25 years old.
