Origin
An Austrian original, the Grüner Veltliner grape began its climb to prominence 30 years ago, when growers discovered that lower yields and greater ripeness led to significantly better wines. The versatile white wine made from “Gru-V” (as it’s casually known) started to emerge as a sommelier favorite during the late 1990s, thanks to its ability to pair with a surprising variety of foods. After a decade of popularity in restaurants, Grüner Veltliner is slowly making its way into the mainstream.
Pairings
Grüner Veltliner is famous for matching with difficult-to-pair foods such as asparagus and artichokes, whose vegetal flavors seem to repel most wines. Grüner accomplishes this with its unique blend of savory and sweet characteristics, as well as its fine acidity. Richer versions work with heavier dishes like white asparagus with hollandaise sauce or any type of rich fish or seafood; try sturgeon, monkfish or seared scallops on a bed of greens or lentils.

Serve well chilled (47°F).
Winemaker
Egmont Höfinger runs his eponymous estate with his daughters, Christine and Johanna, making clean, well-structured wines that are very expressive of the Kamptal region, merging richness and minerality. One of Austria’s most highly regarded wine regions, the Kamptal is located only 40 miles northwest of Vienna. Its well-draining terrain, largely composed of rock, clay and loess, combines with a moderate climate to provide the wine’s racy character and mineral backbone. The region gets its name from the Kamp River which flows through it in a twisting path through lovely hills and valleys.
The Wine
The Kogelberg vineyard is well-known for its decomposed gneiss soils and excellent southern exposure. Here, its mineral appeal comes through loud and clear, as aromas of mango, fresh peas and mandarin orange zest give way to flavors of apricots, mango and crushed rock. A little hint of spritz gives the wine some lift, buoying its mineral focus.
