Origin
The Lodi wine country sits midway between San Francisco Bay and the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The Mediterranean climate, coupled with deep sandy, clay loam soils, tends to promote high yields and consistent quality. With vines first planted by German immigrants in the 1850s, the area is now host to over 100,000 acres. Producing more wine than Napa and Sonoma combined, Lodi is best known for oldvine Zinfandel, but it also produces fine examples of European varietals, such as Tempranillo, Viognier and Verdelho.
Pairings
While quite enjoyable on its own—and a welcome guest at any summer soiree— the Lee Family Verdelho exhibits remarkable versatility at the table. It’s right at home with virtually any treatment of fish and shellfish, most notably prawns and scallops. Simple preparations of poultry and white meat, especially when served with pasta, risotto or polenta, are tailor-made for this Verdelho. For a satisfying vegetarian accompaniment, also consider grilled or roasted vegetables with a dollop of pesto and a squeeze of lemon.

Serve well chilled (45°F).
Winemaker
It was late in his college career at UC Davis that Dan Morgan Lee, who had been studying veterinary medicine, discovered that winemaking not only satisfied his interest in both science and agriculture, but also resonated deeply within his soul. So, after some scholastic gear shifting, he completed his post-graduate studies in oenology and was immediately hired as winemaker at Monterey County’s Jekel Winery. In 1982, Dan and his wife opened the doors at Morgan Winery, which soon became one of the Central Coast’s most recognized wine producers. In 2005, Morgan introduced a second label called Lee Family Farms.
The Wine
Verdelho, which is native to Portugal and the island of Madeira where it is used primarily for the production of fortified wines, is one of the featured wines at Lee Family Farms. An early-ripening grape with naturally high acidity, it prefers warm, dry climates with rocky soils, and Silvaspoons Vineyard in Alta Mesa—a sub-appellation of Lodi—fits the bill perfectly. The palate displays ripe lemon, melon, slightly underripe apricot and yellow plum. Distinguished by nuances of walnut, limestone and dried rosemary, this perfectly balanced gem walks a fine line between reserved generosity and austerity. Total production: 387 cases.
