Origin
A 40-minute drive northeast from the Golden Gate Bridge, the Carneros region is located along the low-lying hills of the Mayacamas mountain range as they flatten out near the northern reaches of the San Francisco Bay. The official boundaries of the appellation straddle both Napa and Sonoma counties, with the larger portion in Sonoma. Profoundly influenced by the effects of both the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean, Carneros is among California's coolest and windiest wine regions, and is best known for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Pairings
Pinot Noir tends to be an extremely versatile food wine. And this offering from Suzanne Hagins is no exception. It promises to stand up nicely to poultry and lighter red meats, while not overwhelming many seafood and vegetarian dishes. Because of its inherent delicacy, however, it is best to avoid dishes that are too powerful or aggressively spiced. Consider simple and subtle preparations that let this Pinot Noir shine.

Serve at cool room temperature (62°F).
Winemaker
Suzanne Hagins, Lutea's founder and winemaker, is a South Carolina native who developed her interest in wine while working in the Charleston restaurant scene. Especially fascinated by Pinot Noir, she headed to Burgundy before settling in California where she worked at De Loach, David Bruce and Goldeneye. And in 2004, Hagins started her own modest winery where she crafts small lots of elegantly styled Pinot Noir from organic and/or biodynamically grown grapes. "Lutea" is the Latin name for the American lotus, a flower native to the southeastern U.S. The lotus seed can lie dormant for centuries and still blossom--Hagins feels this is an apt symbol for wine.
The Wine
Taking a noninterventionist approach, Hagins harvests all the grapes by hand (with scissors!), uses a basket press and forgoes filtration. The results are enticing aromas and flavors of black cherry and black raspberry with hints of cinnamon, clove, forest floor and dark chocolate. Light and well balanced, the wine has ripe tannins and remarkable persistence on the fruit-driven finish.
