Origin
Extending west from the Spanish border into northern Portugal, Douro is a mountainous region located around the Douro River and the valleys of its primary tributaries. This hot, arid region is best known for its sweet, fortified Port, but, in fact, Douro produces at least as much dry table wine. While vines for Port production tend to be planted at lower elevations along the river, grapes for table wine are typically grown at higher altitudes where, due to lower temperatures, they ripen more slowly and less fully.
Pairings
As "Twisted" as it sounds, all you need for a perfect summer celebration is a quick shopping spree in the meat department of your local market, a hot grill, and a bottle of this charming and engaging wine from Niepoort. Virtually anything with grill marks will be a match made in heaven.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
Dirk Niepoort, a fifth-generation winemaker whose family has been making Port since 1842, plunged into the table wine business in the early 1990s and is now considered a top producer of Douro wines.
The Wine
The inspiration behind "Twisted" was to produce an affordable, easy-drinking red that still offers the complexity and depth one expects from a classic Douro wine. Nieepoort worked with the German illustrator Bill Plympton to create the cartoon story depicted on the label. The 2009 vintage is a blend of Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela and Tinta Barroca from various vineyards. It features bright aromas of black berry and red currant, highlighted by notes of camphor and red, rusty earth. On the palate, its exuberant dark fruit character, enhanced by cedar, thyme and rosemary blossom, leads to a juicy, lip-smacking finish.
