Origin
The Russian River Valley is the heart of Sonoma wine country. Characterized by its close proximity to the Pacific Ocean, this is one of California’s coolest winegrowing regions. During the growing season, the fog typically rolls in during the late afternoon and retreats back to the Pacific by noon the following day. This “natural air-conditioning” allows the grapes—most notably Chardonnay and Pinot Noir—to ripen more slowly while retaining flavor, aromatic intensity and elevated levels of acidity.
Pairings
Many foods pair well with Pinot Noir, although excessive fat or too much chili heat can overpower its delicate nature. The smooth texture and medium body of this Orentano Pinot suggest that it will work well with broiled or grilled line-caught salmon, roasted chicken and moist pork chops. The herb and spice flavors in the wine offer a flexible base on which to pair a stunning array of sauces, marinades and seasonings.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
The Buoncristiani family of Sonoma (not to be confused with their Napa cousins, also well-known winemakers) named this wine Orentano after the pastoral Tuscan village from which the family originally hails. The Russian River Buoncristianis have their single seven-acre vineyard off of River Road, one of the most famous wine routes in Sonoma. Planted to mostly French Dijon clones, its eight-year-old vines receive plenty of the Russian River’s famous cold Pacific fog, but it clears by late morning during the growing season to allow the summer sun to ripen the grapes to full, fruity maturity.
The Wine
Generous waves of fruit pour off the nose, including baked strawberries, boysenberry, hints of rhubarb and baking spices. In the mouth, rich, dark cherry pervades alongs with wisps of vanilla, smoke and wild herbs. The texture is classic Russian River—full and expansive in the mouth, the wine has an irresistible silkiness, making it a pleasure by itself or with food.
