Origin
Covering 1,682 acres, the Somerston estate is located high in the hills of Napa Valley, six miles east of Rutherford. Comprised of two historic parcels—the Soda and Elder Valleys—it was originally part of Rancho Catacula, an 8,000-acre land grant. The eastern Soda Valley portion, settled in 1869 by Joshua James Priest, whose family farmed the land for over a century, is still known locally as the Priest Ranch.
Pairings
With time in the bottle, a fine Cabernet slowly develops elegance and grace. As the aging process gradually unravels tannins, it also coaxes out subtle nuance and complexity that make the wine a far more interesting and flexible companion at the table. It is no surprise that this mature Cabernet from Somerston’s Priest Ranch can offer unparalleled pleasure when matched with red meat and game dishes, but vegetarians and carnivores alike will also find deep satisfaction in dishes that judiciously incorporate eggplant, mushrooms, roasted tomato, green or black olives, walnuts or pecans.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
Even though farmers have been tilling what is now the Somerston property since the mid-1800s, the land’s true calling wasn’t revealed until grapes were first planted there in 1970. Then in 1999, recognizing the estate’s potential, the Internet entrepreneur Dan Lynch purchased the property and dramatically expanded its vineyard holdings. Today, thanks to the vision of proprietor Allan Chapman, over 280 acres are planted at elevations ranging from 850 to 2,400 feet. All of the wines are made under the supervision of Craig Becker, whose artisan approach to winemaking and extensive knowledge of viticulture enable him to craft superb wines from a wide range of grape varieties and vineyard sites.
The Wine
This 2006 vintage is the first release of Cabernet Sauvignon under the Priest Ranch label and is made from grapes grown on Somerston estate’s oldest parcels. Oriental Vineyard Block 22 provides backbone and heft while Nightingale Vineyard Block 58 serves up understated richness and purity of fruit. Nuances of chocolate, cedar, toasty vanilla and rosemary blossom are supported by primary notes of currant, black cherry and spiced plum. Noticeable tannins linger on the finish, but they are ripe and in balance with the intensity of the fruit. Displaying admirable elegance and restraint, this wine is just now beginning to reach its peak.
