Origin
Mendoza, located 750 miles northwest of Buenos Aires and 125 miles northeast of Santiago, Chile, is the largest wine-growing area in Argentina, accounting for 70 percent of its total production. Agrelo, a tiny subregion of Mendoza, sits 20 miles south of the city of Mendoza and adjacent to the prestigious Luján de Cuyo sub appellation.
Pairings
Cabernet Franc is generally characterized by its “green” notes, which can range from subtle nuances of tobacco leaf to prominent notes of underripe bell pepper. Chefs, sommeliers and card-carrying “Franc freaks,” are drawn to these leafy characteristics. Meat and game dishes prepared with or marinated in herbs—most notably thyme, rosemary and sage—make for ideal companions at the table. Cabernet Franc is also arguably the most versatile red wine accompaniment to vegetarian cuisine. But for tasty and healthy pairings even carnivores will adore, serve this wine alongside polenta drizzled with olive oil, fresh rosemary and grated Parmesan cheese.

Serve at cool room temperature (62°F).
Winemaker
The Pulenta family has been a prominent and respected force in Argentine viticulture for three generations. Descendants of Italian immigrants and sons of the well-known winegrower Antonio Pulenta, Eduardo and Hugo Pulenta founded Pulenta Estate winery in 2002. Their vineyards are entirely family-owned and farmed for low yields and high quality. These extensive holdings allow the winemaking team to carefully select only the finest grapes. The internationally acclaimed American winemaker and importer Paul Hobbs is proud to feature the Pulenta wines in his portfolio.
The Wine
After centuries of speculation, DNA profiling has at last confirmed that the ubiquitous Cabernet Sauvignon grape is, in fact, the lovechild of Cabernet Franc and...Sauvignon Blanc! Today, even though Cabernet Franc has long since been surpassed by its famed progeny, it still thrives and remains one of the top 20 grape varieties planted worldwide. The 2008 Pulenta combines black currant, blackberry, spiced plum, bell pepper, fresh herbs and graphite. Dense, mouth-filling flavors include dark berries, sun-dried tomato, seared meat, wild herbs, mocha and black licorice. While ripe and generously textured, it is balanced by notable earthy, herbaceous characteristics.
