Origin
California’s viticultural history dates back to the mid-1700’s when Spanish missionaries first planted grapes to produce sacramental wine. Today, California is the world's fourth-largest wine producer. Nearly three-quarters the size of France, the state accounts for 90 percent of North America’s total wine production. Most of California’s 430,000 acres of vineyard land, 3,400 wineries and 112 federally sanctioned regions (AVA’s) are located along a 700 miles stretch between Mendocino and Riverside Counties.
Pairings
Pinot Noir is an extremely versatile food wine, and the Rickshaw is a case in point. It welcomes a broad array of spices; however, it is best to stay away from foods that are too powerful or aggressively seasoned. If in doubt, let the wine shine alongside more refined and subtle preparations. Elegant by nature, it won’t overwhelm many seafood and vegetarian dishes, but it also stands up to lighter red meats and pork and thoroughly delights in the company of poultry—especially hearty, flavorful birds like quail and squab.

Serve at cool room temperature (62°F).
Winemaker
In 2010, Baron Ziegler, Noah Dorrance, and Steve Graff left other wine-related pursuits to start Valkyre Selections. In addition to importing wines from Spain and France, this merry band of industry insiders is-under the Banshee and RICKSHAW labels--dedicated to producing California wines of balance, purity and value. Their business model is simple: scavenge the state for hidden gems tucked in the cellars of other wineries and blend them into what they call “killer wines.” With a meager acceptance rate of about one in fifteen, they have to taste thousands of barrels. “It’s a tough job,” founder Baron Ziegler says unconvincingly, “but someone's gotta do it!"
The Wine
Sourced from vineyards in Anderson Valley and the Sonoma Coast, this unfined and unfiltered charmer spent twelve months in French oak barrels. A wave of aromas rises gently but emphatically from the glass. Background nuances of clove and citrus lend buoyancy to freshly-picked Bing cherry, red plum and blueberry. On the palate, layers of black cherry, ripe strawberry, and Santa Rosa plum are gently kissed by subtle notes of underbrush and assorted baking spices. This delectably feminine wine offers surprising flavor impact and balance. While The Land of Memorable $18 Pinot Noir is sparsely populated, the 2010 Rickshaw deserves permanent residency.
