Origin
The Russian River Valley is the heart of Sonoma wine country. Characterized by its close proximity to the Pacific Ocean, this is one of California’s coolest winegrowing regions. During the growing season, the fog typically rolls in during the late afternoon and retreats back to the Pacific by noon the following day. This “natural air-conditioning” allows the grapes—most notably Chardonnay and Pinot Noir—to ripen more slowly while retaining flavor, aromatic intensity and elevated levels of acidity.
Pairings
One of Pinot Noir’s greatest strengths is its versatility at the table. Its unbridled fruit-forwardness and full palate make it a natural match for richer foods. The Russian Hill will hold its own with assertively flavored but not fatty meats like squab, quail and lean pork chops, especially if the dishes are accompanied by fruit-based sauces or chutneys, which will play to the wine’s berry flavors. Given its blend of earth and fruit, the Russian Hill will also work well with vegetables like beets, sweet potatoes and mushrooms.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
Russian Hill is the estate property of the husband-and-wife team Ed Gomez and Ellen Mack, both of whom were practicing doctors before turning to the wine business. For both, the wine world represented a compelling intersection of their many fields of interest—engineering, history, economics, biology—as well as being an art unto itself. Gomez and Mack founded the property in 1997 after a meticulous two-year search for a site they deemed appropriate to house both outstanding vineyards and a winery. Today they make Pinot Noir, Viognier and Syrah from their estate vineyards as well as a a few wines from high-quality neighboring sites.
The Wine
Layered black and blue fruits are evident on the nose, including marionberry, blackberry and plum, along with a whiff of wet graphite. In the mouth, dark cherry mingles with notes of cedar, vanilla and black tea. The texture is classic Russian River: smooth and clean. Full and expansive in the mouth, the wine has good body but also a tasteful measure of restraint, making it a pleasure to drink by itself or with food.
