Origin
The land of Barolo and Barbaresco, Italy’s Piedmont region is famous worldwide for its red wines from the Nebbiolo grape. But Piedmont is also home to some delicious, if lesser-known, whites, led by the crisp, fruity and refreshing wines from the Cortese di Gavi grape. Colloquially, the wine is just known as Gavi, a name that comes from the town that’s at the center of its production region in the southern hills of Piedmont, near the border with Liguria.
Pairings
Zesty enough to enjoy on its own, the San Matteo Gavi has the structure to stand up to a wide range of light- to medium-bodied fare—from shellfish and flaky white fish to salads, herbed pastas and light chicken, turkey or pork dishes. And unlike many whites, this one can handle a bit of spice or heat. We love it with main-dish salads of chilled shrimp or chicken, especially with fruity (grape, mango, peach) or Asian accents.

Serve well chilled (45°F).
Winemaker
In the less-than-distinguished world of Italian white wines, Gavi was traditionally considered a serviceable quaffer, if unlikely to knock your socks off. San Matteo has only been around since 1999, but the goal in its founding was to create Gavi wines of a higher order, with greater expression and character. The timing of the estate’s founding is less surprising when you learn that Gavi was given DOCG status, Italy’s highest appellation designation, in 1998, imposing important legal safeguards of quality—lowering yields, allowing bottling only within the production area—that make efforts like San Matteo’s to produce a superior Gavi all the more worthwhile.
The Wine
Le Parodine is San Matteo’s top-end Gavi, made of a selection of its best grapes. The wine’s nose offers a heady mix of fruits—with peach, nectarine and lime leading the way—accented by a hint of fresh flowers. In the mouth, the wine is light and crisply flavorful. La Parodine’s exuberant fruitiness, expressed in flavors of honeydew melon drizzled with fresh lime juice, might suggest that the wine would be sweet and blowzy, but in fact it finishes briskly dry and refreshing.
