Origin
California’s Dry Creek Valley is an AVA (American Viticultural Area) located 70 miles north of San Francisco, just outside the town of Healdsburg. Approximately 16 miles long by two miles wide, the valley is formed by Dry Creek, a tributary of the Russian River. With a climate similar to Bordeaux’s, its proximity to the Pacific Ocean and its fast-draining alluvial soils, this region is ideal for growing a diverse array of grape varieties.
Pairings
Voluptuous New World offerings such as this one not only pair well with poultry and seafood, but they often have enough structure and intensity to stand up to simply prepared veal and pork dishes. More daring matches include pumpkin curry; a salad tossed with crab, mango, avocado and Meyer lemon dressing; or even seared ahi tuna with fresh corn and crispy pancetta. Ingredients that highlight this Chardonnay’s intrinsic character include butter, apples, pears, mushrooms, coconut, ginger, pine nuts, Dijon mustard and polenta.

Serve chilled (50°F).
Winemaker
Ed Sbragia served as winemaker at Napa Valley’s Beringer Vineyards for 32 years. He is credited with catapulting the winery, which had never quite recovered from the devastating effects of Prohibition, back into success and onto the world stage. Sbragia had the unique distinction of producing two wines that were named Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year. He continued to produce the wines at Beringer until 2008, when he left to focus on his own winery. Today, Ed Sbragia is president and winemaster while his oldest son, Adam, oversees daily winemaking operations.
The Wine
While best known for growing what is arguably the world’s finest Zinfandel, Dry Creek is a gracious host to Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, with Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay also performing quite well in the cooler parts of the region. And Sbragia’s 13- acre Home Ranch Vineyard benefits from some of the region’s lowest temperatures. This 2009 Chardonnay is rich and full-flavored with a substantial imprint of high-toast oak. Yet it is also nimble, exhibiting generous notes of citrus, honeysuckle and pineapple. It finishes with brisk acidity and a tactile impression of earthy minerality—a trait commonly found in Dry Creek Valley wines.
