Origin
Vienna revived its ancient appellation in 1990 and now boasts its own, officially sanctioned wine-growing region. Of the city’s 1,600 acres, the most famous and best vineyards grow on the slopes of Nussberg hill, which rises up from the nearby Danube. Within walking distance of downtown, Nussberg is blessed with both complex soils and a warm climate, which have produced extraordinary white wines for centuries.
Pairings
The appealing, multi-layered complexity of this blend can serve as a refreshing stand-alone aperitif and can also offer remarkable versatility at the table. It adores fresh, clean flavors that match its vibrant personality. Consider a simple pâté made from chicken or pork, a savory scallop mousse or basic crab cakes with aioli. This blend will also work beautifully with many salads, vegetables and leafy greens.

Serve well chilled (45°F).
Winemaker
Seven miles north of Vienna sits the ancient monastery of Stift Klosterneuburg. Currently home to Augustinian monks from around the world, it was founded in 1114 as a collegiate church by the Margrave Leopold III. More than 900 years ago, vineyard and winery operations were established as a means of financing the abbey. Today, Stift Klosterneuburg still produces wines from its 260 acres of vineyard land scattered across southern Austria. In addition to those within the city limits of Vienna, the abbey owns vineyards in the regions of Gumpoldskirchen and Tattendorf, as well as its estate holdings in Klosterneuburg.
The Wine
In recent years, producers like Stift Klosterneuberg have dramatically increased the quality of Viennese wine and, in the process, revived the old local tradition of producing special field blends known as “Gemischter Satz.” Typically, each grape is vinified separately and mixed later, but Gemischter Satz is crafted from as many as 12 different grape varieties grown side by side in the same vineyard before being harvested, pressed and fermented together. A coalescence of Riesling, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Grüner Veltiner, the Wiener Nussberg offers flavors of honeysuckle, green apple and assorted stone fruits. The lively finish features bright acidity and a lingering, dusty minerality.
